What a week!

I’m sorry I haven’t posted in a while. We had a big storm go through the area on Tuesday night (even an unconfirmed tornado sighting) and it took out our phone line. DH was supposed to call the phone company Wednesday, but he forgot. Then we left on Thursday for a 4 day/3 night backpacking trip in Shenandoah National Park. We came back to the phone still being out, so I’m writing this now with the hope that I’ll be able to upload it tomorrow when I go to Sue’s for BBQ and swimming.First off, a very very big thank you to “A Stitching Friend” and “ASF’s Helper”. I received the packaged Wednesday night. I’m sorry I haven’t been able to post anything to thank you for the wonderful generosity earlier. I was all choked up and almost in tears when I realized what I was opening. I wanted to run upstairs and post right away to get the thank you out… but our phone was still down. ASF was kind enough to send me a signed copy of Dracolair’s Phoenix (with accessory threads) and Something Different’s Ione. Too many projects I want to start… not enough time! And then the next morning, we left for our 3 night/30 mile backpacking trip. We got back this afternoon. We hiked about 8 miles a day for the first three days and then only 4 miles the last day. I had to get back for a 6:30 pm meeting.During our hiking we saw lots of cool scenery, thru-hikers (we did part of the Appalachian Trail), 3 deer, and 5 bears! We saw a mom bear with 2 cubs on Friday morning just as we got back on the trail, an adolescent bear trying to scare a couple having a picnic at Elkwallow Picnic Area, and another bear this morning when we had been on the trail for less than a mile. I have pictures on my old digital camera (didn’t want to take my new digital camera with us). So, I’ll post them at a later date (once I find all the cables and such). I also happy to report that I wasn’t terrified one night during this trip! I’m usually terrified that a bear or murderer or wild cat will come and kill us during the night. I was much more laid back about the whole bear thing this time. Even when we saw the mommy bear and her cubs, all I did was stop point the bear out to my DH and waited for the bear to run away from us. It went something like this… Mommy bear to little cub: Humans! Get down the tree now, we have to go!… The bears were definitely more scared of us than we were of them. I’m really really glad that Shenandoah has black bears and not grizzlies. So, to celebrate the absence of my bear fear… I bought a little stuffed black bear. I named him Thornton after the trail we camped near our second night out (and our first night with Thornton). I’ve been wanting a small stuffed black bear to take with us backpacking (to keep the other bears away). It was a really good trip and it really bought home the important things in life… like toilet paper. We got home (after our traditional stop at Cracker Barrel) before 3, took a nice shower and then crashed for a nap. I’m glad I set the alarm, otherwise I would have slept through my meeting! I’m feeling okay. I have a blister on each heel and my ankles, calves, and shins are a big sore. I also have tons of bug bites. But other than that, we are doing really well. This was our longest trip to date. We’ve done 2 night trips before, but this if the first 3 nighter. My meeting… well, I don’t think I’ve mentioned it on the blog or maybe I have, I can’t remember. But I’m going to Honduras for 10 days in August to help build houses. It is a yearly (and sometime bi-yearly) trip that the pastor from Glade UCC organizes. Every other year the pastor from my church (Grace UCC) goes and this year he convinced me to go too. I’ve been going to the Garret County (Maryland) Habitat work camps that my church organizes, so this is just taking it one step further. So, today was the first orientation meeting where we met everyone. I knew three people there. Pastor Joe and another lady from my church and a guy I graduated with and haven’t seen in 14 years. I shouldn’t have been suprised to see him. I knew that was his church and that he was the organist there. But I haven’t seen him since he lost a lot of weight (a friend told me this a couple of years ago). And he is so much different than the guy I’ve known since 1st grade!

Sweet Baby James

No, not the needle purse I finished last week! But my new nephew. It was quite a busy week. But between working and replacing the brakes on my car, DH and I managed stopped by his sister’s on Saturday to meet the new kid in the family. I even got to hold him! And I have proof…and I have a cute picture of mommy and baby…While we were at DSIL’s, I was admiring her roses, when DH told me that mine were blooming! Well, that just goes to show how out of it I’ve been this past week. So, I had to take a picture of my cute new roses! DH planted this for me this year. The other rose bush has buds on it and they should be opening this week!I forgot to add the Stitcher’s Five…Finishing:1. How many have you framed on the wall?
I have two on the wall (TW’s Above the Clouds and Stretch). And this is just my wall, I’m not counting gifts I’ve stitched.2. How many do you have finished in other ways?
I have two framed and on the book shelf (Larnate’s Little Sheep and a rose from a greeting card kit) and I have the little motif on DH’s stocking (Enchanting Lair dragon from the Celebrations of Stitch book). Again, just stuff in my house.
3. What was the most expenisve finishing?
I’ve only had one piece professional framed, TW’s Wedding Sampler. So, by default that would be the most expensive.4. Have you finished anything yourself?
Yup, I framed everything myself except for the wedding sampler.5. Describe your favourite finished piece.
Well, I think the way I framed TW’s Heart Sampler was pretty cool. The frame I picked (at Joann’s) had a 3-d effect for the matts. I’m also proud of my mini Monet and the way the framing came out for that.—–

Strange Week

May 22, 2004 on 12:00 am | In Uncategorized | No Comments

warning… this is mostly a work rant…I’ve had a very strange week. I’ve been going from 1st shift to 2nd shift to 3rd shift all week long. I had 3rd shift on the tvac test over the weekend (Saturday and Sunday nights) and then I took off Monday (got home at 7 am). I worked 2nd shift on tvac on Tuesday (but went in at 9am to my regular project). Then had my normal hours on Wednesday and Thursday. And today… 3rd shift again. I’m scheduled for tomorrow also, but I’m hoping they stick to schedule and end coverage at 8pm, which means I won’t be coming in.So, as a result, I’m not sure which end is up, what day it is or even what time it is. My internal clock isn’t the greatest to begin with (I’m talking about being able to guess the time without a clock handy, not the baby making internal clock). And in the middle of all this, I’ve been madly trying to get a presentation ready for next week. It is a fairly big presentation and it is happening at the customer’s headquarters in Taiwan. As a result, the entire team isn’t going. So, the mechanical guy is going to brief my slides. So, I had to come in early today (he was leaving early, I was working 3rd shift) to go over the general idea of the slides. Some of the team left today for Taiwan, the rest are leaving either over the weekend or on Monday. I’m not going. No problemo. I get a quiet week at work next week. Oh, but wait, I’m going to go backpacking for 4 days/3 nights starting on Thursday! I’m really looking forward to the time off.

Stitcher’s Five - Wishlists

May 18, 2004 on 12:00 am | In Uncategorized | No Comments

1. Do you keep a wishlist?
Not one that is written down. It is in my head.2. If so how many items are on it?
Right now, one (but I tried to buy it at the beginning of April). The entire order was a nightmare. I wanted three designs. The first one was in stock. The second one was Jupiter Abstract from Character Creations. The place I ordered from prints the designs for Character Creations and just needed to get a soft copy from the company to print it. The third design was Maria van Scharrenburg’s Butterfly Fairies, which I was told they were ordering that week. I let them know that I wanted the first one as soon as possible since I wanted to stitch it for a friend’s birthday in May. They said no problem, they would send the first two out. I also had money in paypal and wanted to use that. No problem they said. Then no emails, no nothing. Two weeks later, I get an email to make the paypal payment for the two charts. I did that and a week later I got my package. Granted the birthday was the following week, so no way I would be able to stitch it for my friend. And… I had a $5 off coupon which I mentioned in my email, but they total forgot about. It has now been two weeks since I received my package and I haven’t heard a word about the Butterfly Fairies. I don’t even know if I will get it from them one day or not or I would order it else where… grr. I am really pissed at this company.3. Name three of those item
Butterfly Faries4. Do you let other people see it?
Not really. No need.5. How often do you add to it?
As things catch my eye.

Strawberries

May 17, 2004 on 12:00 am | In Uncategorized | No Comments

Last year we planted maybe ten little strawberry plants. I think we got maybe four strawberries last year (4 more than we were expecting). But this year, we got a ton! We just spent the evening picking strawberries and have a nice big bowl full. So, we glazed them with some powered sugar and they will be our snacking berries. The next batch will probably be turned into jam!
